For those people heading to yogyakarta indonesia .l would like to recomend the beaches of gunung kidul 60km south east of yogjakarta city.there is little information in english about this area on the internet or in the guide books .so here is some basic information. The gunung kidul area is part of the one of the worlds largest tropical limestone karst systems consisting of 40.000 dome hills beneath which there are some 119 caves systems many with under gound rivers.this limestone plateau slopes down toward the dramatic coast consisting of high cliff headlands and beautiful beaches. The gunung kidul area is part of the gunung sewu (thousand mountains) national geopark, and resently the indonesian govenment has applied for UNESCO international geopark status for the gunung sewu area.
The beaches along the gunung kidul coast are very beautiful, far better than anything you will find on Bali. There are many beaches each with its own look and feel also the area along the coast is has few inhabitants so you can have a beach to your self .activities in this area include swimming (baron and nandong beach) surfing(krakal and wodiombo beach) rock climbing (ciung beach) and snorkeling and turtle watching (wodiombo beach). to get here you can rent a taxi ,should cost about 400 thousand rp .or try going by bus, just go to the main bus station (bus 4 from maliboro street) then take the bus to wonosari (7000 to 8000 rp),get down at the wonosari bus station go out and there you will find the number 16 bus to baron beach and kukup beach (15.000 rp just tell the driver which beach you want to go to) . motor bikes can be rented for trips to the other beaches krakal is 7 km from kukup and wodiombo is 25km ,buses leave for wonosari every half hour from baron one km from kukup ..if you need accommodation my wife and l run Villa Tirasari which is situated on a hill between baron and kukup .villa tirasari is only 70 metres from the sea and features panoramic views along the coast . and if you are looking for food we also run dp cafe at kukup beach which serves local sea food as well as the usual backpacker fare ,we are also the only place in the area that sells beer and where english is spoken. photos of this area can be found on my website www.onedarylsprakecomposer.com if you need any help you can find me at dp cafe kukup .
